How to keep cats off of dining room furniture?

I read somewhere that cats do not like foil. Maybe you could lay a sheet of foil over the furniture while you are at work. Then again maybe cat fur oil is good for the furniture :) Just kidding, I have the same problem, just gave in. But if I have something on my counter that I want the cat to leave alone, I put a loose piece of foil on it. I guess they don't like the noise it makes. Also, you might try a bowl of oranges or lemons or a candle (not burning of course) just sitting on the table and buffet.
