Could a gasoline engine ever use compression ignition kind of like a diesel?

Compression can be raised in a gas engine enough to cause gas to ignite without spark, but the gas doesn't burn smoothly in the cylinder. The fuel/air mixture explodes at the wrong time causing damage to the engine.
