Can we do without the US post office?

In this day of email and electronic shopping, is the USPS obsolete? Other carriers [UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc] could do the deliveries in the same amount of time and for the same cost without the hle of carting your package to the post office and having it weighed, and without paying exorbitant prices for stamps.
